Technology
OverviewThe Alexus Vehicle Maintenance System was designed from ground up as a robust graphical 3-Tier internet solution to meet fleet maintenance information requirements. Throughout the design process, emphasis was placed on complete application partitioning leading to a full featured object oriented software solution. The core levels of the software can be grouped into the following: Client-Side Graphical User Interface Layer The Alexus system's graphical user interface (GUI) was developed with commercially available graphical operating systems and runs inside of standard web browsers. The client side of the application is designed to operate either on a PC connected to the Intranet or Internet or through the use of an Application Server. This section of the application presents the user with the ability to access the central database system to perform transactions and ad-hoc reporting requirements. Access to the above-described Client-Side Graphical User features is accomplished through the use of a mouse or consistent keyboard commands. Using the Alexus Maintenance system is a simple point and click operation. Application Server Interface Layer This layer provides connectivity to a central database system for access and modification to related information. The Alexus Maintenance application was designed to support the predominant networking environments established. Security controls are implemented at the network operating system layer as well as the underlying application database. Connectivity is possible through direct local area network (LAN), remote wide area network (WAN) and asynchronous dial up connections. The Application Server interface layer provides database caching, business rules and logic processing and state management. Complete support is provided for TCP/IP networks. The Alexus system is capable of supporting up to 2000 users when implemented on a hardware architecture that allows for flexible expansion and growth. Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) Layer The Alexus Maintenance system was developed as a normalized relational database design employing object role modeling (ORM) and entity relationship (ER) techniques. Inherent in the design is partitioning of data storage, core application logic, security, transaction audit trails, and definition of business rules. Developed and available on Oracle9i, Transactions are processed on the database server thus freeing up the client computer to perform the mundane tasks of data entry validation, graphics processing and other user interface requirements. Most organizations with 2 or more locations deploy Alexus using a 3-tier application server model comprising of a web browser on the client, Application Server(s) and one or more Database Servers.
